Leader lauds high turnout in Bahman 22 rallies, says military threats cover-up for economic pressure

Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has lauded the Iranian people’s massive turnout in the nationwide rallies last Friday on Bahman 22 (February 10) marking the 38th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

He made these remarks during an audience he granted on Wednesday morning in Tehran to a group of people from the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan.

Last Friday’s rallies that saw several million people from all walks of life converge upon Tehran’s Azadi (Freedom) Square, reaffirming their pledge of allegiance to the ideals of the Islamic Revolution and unanimously denouncing US threats, astounded the world. All over Iran, similar mass rallies were held as the Islamic Revolution stepped into its 39th year since its toppling of the British-installed and US-backed Pahlavi regime.

This was in response to the Leader of the Revolutions remarks last week to new US president, Donald Trump, that the Iranian people will give a fitting reply to his threats.

Ayatollah Khamenei told today’s gathering of people from Azarbaijan: “These are the third and fourth generations of the Revolution, who are standing against the enemy and making themselves heard with determination.”

Elsewhere in his comments, the Leader brushed aside as “sheer lies” claims of certain quarters that a military confrontation with Iran would have been imminent had it not been for the nuclear deal that was signed between Tehran and the P5+1 group of states in July 2015.

“Why do they mention war?” said the Leader, and provided the answer by saying: In order to divert minds, since the economic pressure and sanctions is the “real war” against Iran.”

The threat of a military action has been used as a strategy in dealing with the Islamic Republic by both the previous and current US administrations, he added.

Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to the enemy plots to pile up economic pressure against Iran in a bid to spread disappointment among the public, calling on the officials to redouble their efforts to address the economic woes in the country, including unemployment and inflation.

He said enemies have failed in their attempts to portray the Islamic Republic system of government in Iran as inefficient and such attempts amount to beating the air.
