Hereunder, we will paraphrase and analyze the verse to see how it attests to Ghadir Khumm event.[1]
1. Occurrence of the Event in the Past Tense
The occurrence of the event in the sentence (maa onzela elayk = which has been revealed to you) is in the past and for two reasons, it is a real past not tense common to the present or future:
· Past tense has been made to refer to the past meaning. In case there is no match to the tense common to the present or future, it conveys the same subject matter that has taken place in the past.
The Verse of Proclamation was revealed in the final days of the blessed life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) of Islam and if we say it conveys the tense common to the present and future, the meaning of the verse shall have to be "and if you do not announce in the final days of your life that which We will reveal to you, then you have not conveyed His message." There is no hadith to convey such a meaning and there is no such reference by Shia or Sunni exegetes.
The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) was thinking about the difficulty of the task and the way of proclaiming the task that the verse was revealed to him, to assure him there would be no worries on people's reaction when he is to proclaim it because the Almighty God "will protect you against people."
