Muslims in Cambridge have reached out to the wider community following an incident in which a pig’s head was left outside a Cambridge mosque.
Worshippers at the prayer centre in Darwin Drive, Arbury, opened the doors of the mosque to the public on Saturday.
The move comes after the head was left on the doorstep of Shah Jalal Bangladeshi Community House in September. The city’s Muslim community was left shocked by the incident, which triggered a major police investigation.
The prayer centre threw open its doors to non-Muslims to help forge greater links with the community. Muslims celebrated the religious festival of Eid last week.
Mark Woods, a worshipper at the mosque, said: “We are trying to turn a negative into a positive. More young people are getting involved with the mosque. We decided to have an open day to reach out to the community.
‘‘It was a really useful occasion and I think the community came together well to show that this is the way forward. We are planning another event before Christmas.’’
A man and woman from Cambridge were bailed to return to Parkside police station on December 3 after two arrests were made related to the incident, as the News reported.
