Yemeni security authorities on Wednesday released 40 Houthi-led northern Shiite prisoners following a Qatari mediation, a week after the authorities set free some 428 of the prisoners, a security official said.
The 40 prisoners were released from a jail in the northern province of Saada, where the prisoners are stationed, the Sanaa-based official of the Interior Ministry said on codition of anonymity.
He said the release came under the supervision of the Qatari mediation to cement a ceasefire deal brokered by the Qatari government in last August between the Yemeni government and the Shiite group.
In return, the official said, the Huthi members handed over to the security authorities a number of military equipment they seized during years of sporadic war that ended in February last year.
Last week, the authorities released some 428 prisoners with the mediation of the Qatari government, according to a statement which posted on Huthi Shia\'s website.
On Aug. 26, the Yemeni government and the northern Shiite group signed an agreement in Doha to cement a fragile ceasefire in northern Yemen that ended sporadic battles since 2004. The agreement set a timetable for implementing previous truce deals, including the 2008 Doha peace agreement and the ceasefire deal signed on Feb. 11, 2010.
