Pakistanis rally in support of Bahrainis

The demonstrators gathered in the capital Islamabad to show their solidarity with the people of Bahrain.

The protestors condemned Bahrain Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa's visit to Pakistan, who is said to be in Islamabad to discuss the growing political unrest in his country with high-ranking Pakistani officials.

During the demonstration, the organizers of the rally called on Islamabad to support the people of Bahrain instead of the government.

“Today the foreign minister of Bahrain has come to Pakistan and we all know why he came here. He came here for involvement of Pakistan in Bahraini activity to stop the revolutionary activities of Bahrain,” Syed Hassan Kazmi, a protester at the rally said.

Meanwhile, the protestors blocked Islamabad's main road for several hours, disrupting the traffic. They also threatened to stage more demonstrations if the government would continue its support for the Bahraini authorities.

Islamabad has so far remained silent over the violent crackdown on peaceful anti-government protestors in Bahrain. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry, however, has voiced concerns over the recent developments in Bahrain, calling for restoration of peace and tranquility to the volatile state.

“As far as Bahrain is concerned, government of Pakistan and foreign ministry in particular would like to see peace and stability in the region and we do not wish to see a region that is destabilized in any manner,” Pakistani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tehmina Janjua said.

At least 24 people have so far been killed and around 1000 injured in protests against the rule of the Al Khalifa dynasty in Bahrain. The protests against the government began in mid-February.
