The Swabi Bar Association (SBA), Islamabad, on Friday staged a protest against the burning of copies of the holy Quran by unidentified persons.
Led by the association’s president Ahmad Ali Khan, the lawyers gathered at the Swabi Judicial Complex and chanted slogans to condemn the people involved in the heinous crime.
Speaking on the occasion, Ahmad Ali Khan said those found involved in the desecration of the holy book must be identified and punished.
“Being Muslims, we cannot tolerate such acts and the people who set copies of the holy Quran on fire at a religious institution at Motikhel Mohallah of Maneri Payan village two days ago were not Muslims,” he said. He demanded that the police must hunt down the criminals.
Unidentified miscreants allegedly set on fire about 80 copies of the Holy Quran in Maneri Payan village late Tuesday night, triggering mass protest and public anger on Wednesday.
Sources said that unknown miscreants entered a madrassa in Motikhel by scaling a wall, broke the locks of a room and torched the copies of the holy book. “We had placed copies of the holy Quran in the cupboard and some were there in a cot lying in the middle of the room,” stated one of the students. Students said that some of the copies of the Holy Quran survived the fire as the miscreants immediately fled the area.
Soon after knowing about the incident, the police officials with heavy contingents reached the madrassa. Officials of the district administration also visited the seminary and pledged action against the suspects.
The officials said they could not immediately unveil the cause of the incident. However, they admitted that the incident had shaken the entire administration and the area. Police said that an FIR had been registered in the Swabi City Police Station against the unidentified arsonists.
