More protests erupt around Manama

Protesters poured into the streets in several towns and villages around Manama on Thursday, urging the Al Khalifa regime to step down.

The demonstrators called for the immediate release of prisoners and demanded a full withdrawal of all Saudi forces who invaded the Persian Gulf island on March 14 to assist the Bahraini government crush anti-regime protests.

Activists also called for a massive turnout of protesters across the country on Friday.

On Wednesday evening, Bahraini regime forces attacked a gathering of mourners commemorating a 16-year-old boy who died after he was run over by a police vehicle during a protest in Juffair in November.

Dozens of people have been killed and thousands more have been arrested or fired from their jobs in Bahrain since the beginning of the uprising in the Persian Gulf nation in February.

Many health workers, teachers, opposition figures and human rights activists have been arrested ever since and are still facing trial or serving prison terms over participation in demonstrations.

The continued repression comes despite a December 21 statement issued by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, who urged Bahraini authorities to “urgently take confidence-building measures."

She also called for unconditional release of “those who were convicted in military tribunals or are still awaiting trial for merely exercising their fundamental rights to freedom of expression and assembly.”

Meanwhile, Bahrain Human Rights Society called on the interior ministry to investigate human rights violations against anti-regime protesters in prisons.
