If, as a result of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s efforts, the wave of interest in Islam grows, it can be said that the diplomacy of unity has been boosted.
Gholam Reza Karimi, academic board member of Kharazmi University made the remark in an interview with IQNA, adding that diplomacy is traditionally defined as managing foreign policy in a peaceful way and through dialogue.
He said diplomacy is a strategy followed by a country in relations with other countries. He noted that based on the diplomacy of unity the Islamic Republic of Iran should pursue development of ties and relations with Islamic countries, governments and organizations through dialogue.
Karimi underlined that weakened relations with the Muslim Ummah will result in the weakening of the diplomacy of unity.
“If in a given period of time, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s establishment maintains a weak relation with Islamic governments, organizations and nations, it would mean a failure in pursing the diplomacy of unity.”
Former secretary general of ISESCO’s office in Iran added that if Iran presents a positive model of an Islamic system to the Muslim world, it would be a positive move toward the diplomacy of unity.
He stressed that in addition to the elites of the Muslim world, the masses should also be the addressees of the diplomacy of unity, as diplomacy means affecting the public opinion.
Pointing to the problems in the way of diplomacy of unity, Karimi said the arrogant powers pose serious challenges in different ways such as provoking discord among Shia and Sunni Muslims.
“Within the Muslim world, there is [the challenge posed by] Salafists and new Wahabists who consider no value for other Islamic schools of thought and prescribe violent behavior.”
He went on to say that in the past two years and since the advent of the Islamic Awakening in the region, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution has stressed the need for close interaction with Muslim countries through timely strategies, especially the diplomacy of unity.
