On Sunday, militants of al-Nusra Front (al-Qaeda branch in Syria) imposed Zakat (alms) on residents in the countryside of Idlib province, northern Syria.
Nusra issued Sunday a statement saying that residents of the town of Dana and its surroundings in the countryside of Idlib are demanded to pay Zakat to the group.
Local sources said that al-Nusra Front has notified residents through a statement to pay Zakat in order to fund the group’s operations against regime forces.
According to the statement, the money was divided into types such as gold, jewelry, silver, cash, cars, real estate, restaurants, laboratories, pledges and construction.
“Zakat should be paid according to the total profit each person makes,” the Nusra statement added.
Al-Nusra Front vowed to collect the alms this week “in accordance with the Islamic Sharia”.
civil rights activist Ahmed as-Salloumi said that since Syrian rebel factions seized control of Idlib, militants of Nusra have been running major areas in the province.
