Supreme Leader Pardons over 900 Iranian Prisoners

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday pardoned and commuted prison terms of 930 inmates sentenced by various Iranian courts.

The Ayatollah also accepted change in punishment of several of those prisoners.

The Leader made the decision on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the large feast when the Muslims celebrate end of fasting month of Ramadan.

The decision was also in response to a request by Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani.

According to Article 110 of the Constitution, the Supreme Leader has the authority to pardon or commute prison terms of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

Office of the Supreme Leader announced June 18th as the first day of fasting month of Ramadan.

The advent of Ramadan may vary from country to country depending on the situation of the moon. Since the new moon is not in the same state at the same time globally, the beginning and ending dates of Ramadan depend on what lunar sightings receive in each location.

As a result, Ramadan dates vary in different countries, but usually only by a day.
