Ahlul Bayt News Agency - Kurdish fighters have encircled the ISIS militants who have re-entered the town of Tal Abyad known as Gire Spi in Kurdish, which the Kurds freed from the jihadists 15th June.
According to Kurdish news website Hawar News, IS entered the town from the eastern front, taking cover in a school. Clashes between Kurdish and IS fighters have been reported in the west and east of the city.
The latest attack comes after IS militants carried out a massacre in Kobani 25th June, killing over 200 Kurdish civilians. The IS-attack on Tel Abyad is likely another attempt by IS to embarrass the Kurdish forces that have recently scored significant victories over the extremist group.
Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) have surrounded the fighters, and are engaging them in clashes.
The US-led anti-IS coalition in a statement recently said they would continue to support Kurdish fighters with airstrikes.
The US-led coalition carried out airstrikes in Hasakah, Raqqah and Deir ar-Zour on Tuesday. No airstrikes were reported close to Tel Ebyad.
In other news, the YPG says it has completely taken over the Aziziye neighbourhood in Hasakah, and two additional villages in Hasakah’s countryside.
