The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has issued a set of guidelines on environmental policies, in a letter to the heads of the three branches of the Iranian government, in relation to implementation of article 110 of Iran’s constitution.
In his letter, the Leader sets out the central planks of Iran’s environmental policies, which includes the formation of a national environmental strategy, coordinated management of Iran’s natural environmental resources, toughening up of laws and penalties dealing with environmental destruction, drawing up of an atlas of flora and fauna of Iran, strengthening of environmental diplomacy, boosting Iran’s “green economy”, and the promotion of cultural and environmental ethics based on Iranian and Islamic values.
The overall environmental policies were arrived at after consultations with experts of Iran’s Expediency Council, and these have been set out in a letter to the heads of the three branches of the government.
The letter emphasizes the setting up of a coordinated environmental strategy, as well as providing a healthy environment for all the people to live in, and observing environmental justice and making sure that future generations can also benefit from a healthy environment.
The letter also called for constant monitoring of the environment, and strict control of polluting agents of water, soil and air.
The Leader’s letter also calls for monitoring and “management” of climate change, as well as ways of countering various environmental threats , such as desertification, sand storms and dust particles, drought , and environmental damage caused by radioactivity. The letter says a close eye should also be kept on new environmental threats and phenomena.
In his letter the Leader also emphasized that fuels which are environmentally-friendly should also be promoted.
The Leader also said steps should be taken to make the manufacturing sector more environmentally-friendly, and consumption of water, food, resources and energy should be optimized to minimize damage to the environment.
The Leader also calls for bilateral and multilateral efforts to fight environmental pollution in the region, as well as the wider world.
