The Grand Ayatollah Sistani answered questions about lying to guide others.
Question: Is it allowed to lie to guide a person? For example, telling lies to a person who commits bad deeds, by saying I dreamed last night you were in hell, in order to scare him to give up his bad deeds; or for making peace between two persons and similar cases. And please say if telling lies based on convenience is allowed or not?
The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: Telling lies is allowed in two occasions.
- To remove harm from self or other believer.
- To make peace between two persons and instead of telling lies for guiding others can use words which have different meanings to listener and speaker (Toriyeh). And telling lies based on convenience is not allowed. In both of these cases, if there are possibilities of telling the truth and Toriyeh, even if the other persons understands a different meaning, according to Wajeb precaution, must use Toriyeh.
