Grand Ayatollah Sistani answers some inquiries regarding gold:
Question: Why is using of gold and silver dishes, forks, spoons and knifes haram?
Answer: According to Islamic Sharia, eating and drinking in gold and silver dishes is forbidden. There are traditions forbidding this.
Question: Is it admissible using of gold and silver cuff-links pins and tie pins?
Answer: It is forbidden for man to use gold ornaments.
Question: Can a man wear a platinum ring?
Answer: Yes, he can.
Question: Is it permissible for men to wear white or yellow gold?
Answer: It is not permissible.
Question: What is the present day equivalent in mithqal or grams of the weight in gold known as “al-himsa”?
Answer: Al-Himsa is 1/24 of the mithqãl as-sayrafi; and the latter is 4.64 grams; so the weight of al-himsa will be 0.193 grams.
