Member of the Assembly of Experts of Iran, Sheikh Hashem Hashemzadeh Herisi said on Thursday that Islam attaches great importance to the issue of human rights.
Herisi made the remarks in a ceremony held in in this northwestern Iranian provincial capital city to commemorate the Islamic Human Rights and Human Dignity Day in Tehran (August 3).
He also underscored that the issue of human rights is more powerful and beyond what is called human rights among the world countries.
'Human rights is a religious obligation (vajeb) and one of the laws of the Islamic Sharia,' said the cleric.
Admitting that Iran has 'never claimed' to be the first country in the world that fully observes all aspects of human rights, Harisi urged the need to meet 'few weaknesses' to avoid any accusations to be leveled against Islam.
On August 3rd, was marked as the Islamic Human Rights Day in Iran.
A ceremony was held by the High Council for Human Rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran to commemorate the occasion.
During the ceremony, the 2016 Islamic Human Rights Award was jointly presented to Bahraini top Shia cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim and Arzu Merali, a member of the Islamic Human Rights Commission in London.
Several high-ranking Iranian officials including Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, military and civilian officials were present in the ceremony.
The High Council for Human Rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran gives the Islamic Human Rights Award each year to the defenders of the Islamic human rights who support and promote these rights in innovative ways, regardless of their religions or beliefs.
