Ahlul Bayt News Agency, Geelani, who heads the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference, was taken into custody from his Hyderpora residence, a police officer said. He has been shifted to the Humhama police station in central Budgam district.
Earlier, the 81-year old Kashmiri leader, who was under house arrest for past few days, had warned that he would break through the police cordon to attend Eid al-Fitr prayers at famous Hazratbal shrine if the curbs on his movement were not lifted forthwith.
Geelani had also said that his five-point demands to New Delhi were final and immutable, and no concessions would be made in the proposals.
“The Kashmiri people have been driven to the wall to such an extent that they have no option left but to do or die,” he said before his arrest.
The arrest came on a day when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was expected to hold a crucial meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to discus Kashmir crisis.
CCS is likely to announce new measures to bring calm to strife torn Kashmir where 70 people have died in police firing in past three months of unrest.
