Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan activist

Kyrgyz security authorities have detained a Dagestani native, Nizami Abiyev, who is a member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), the Kyrgyz State National Security Committee (GKNB) told Interfax on Wednesday.

"During a search operation in Bishkek on July 12, security officers held IMU member Abiyev, a Russian citizen and native of Dagestan, who is wanted by Tajik authorities," the GKNB said.

The man participated in the massive prison break in Dushanbe on August 23, 2010, the agency said.

Several prison guards were killed during the escape.

"It was established that Abiyev illegally crossed the Tajik-Kyrgyz border while trying to flee during a pursuit by Tajik security forces in early July this year with intent to travel on to Russia," the Kyrgyz GKNB said. A criminal case has been launched over the illegal border crossing.

Abiyev is being charged with murder, organizing a criminal community, stealing weapons, ammunition, explosive substances and devices, and the illegal crossing of the Tajik border.
