21 injured in clash over Muharram procession in India’s Bihar state

A total of 21 people, including six policemen, were injured in a clash between two groups over passage of a Tazia procession on the occasion of Muharram at Ganga Vihar village in Bihar's Gaya district Tuesday.

The two groups attacked each other with swords, spears and other sharp weapons and threw stones, injuring 15 people from both sides, pti reported quoting Superintendent of Police (SP) Satyaveer Singh as said.

Policemen who rushed to control the situation were also attacked and six of them, including deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) Sunil Kumar were injured.

This prompted the police to fire ten rounds in the air to disperse the warring groups, he said.

Bodh Gaya police station officer in-charge TN Tiwari and four other policemen were also injured by the clashing sides.

'The situation is now tense but under control,' Singh said adding additional policemen have been deployed in the village to maintain peace.

The injured were admitted to the primary health centre at Bodh Gaya, the SP said.

In Agra, mourners protested after Tazia got stuck under steal girders near a railway bridge in Freeganj-Biraganj area.

The girders were temporarily removed after the protest, police said.
