A Muslim cemetery located in the western Thracian city of Komotini (Gümülcine in Turkish) was desecrated on Sunday.
Vandals defaced 11 gravestones, including historical ones, in the Poşpoş Muslim Cemetery in Komotini.
Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Ahmet Hacıosman, a deputy from Greece's Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), said the cemetery had also been vandalized in the past, adding that the incident had been met with concern and sadness by the Turkish minority in western Thrace.
“The perpetrators of this incident, whose real intention is to disturb the public peace in the region, should be found and brought to justice as soon as possible and necessary precautions should be taken to prevent any other incidents like this from happening again,” Hacıosman noted.
Stating that the cemetery is not sufficiently protected, Kalkanca Cultural Association President Hasan Ali Çakır said the Gümülcine mufti should take measures to ensure the safety of the Muslim cemetery.
This is the third time the same cemetery has been defaced after vandals desecrated it in August 2010.
