"Quran Teaching Should Be Part of Formal Education"

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Teaching the Quran should be part of formal education in all Muslim countries, the son of late Abdul-Basit Abdus-Samad, renowned Egyptian Quran reciter, said.

In an exclusive interview with IQNA, Sheikh Yasser Abdul-Basit Abdus-Samad added that views on teaching the Quran as a subject should change and that it ought to be considered an essential course in schools.

He said that as well as schools, private Quran teaching classes should also spread in Islamic societies.
Sheikh Yasser, himself a prominent Qari, said this method, whereby a private Quran expert teaches Quran to children of a family in their home has been widespread in Egypt's cities and towns.

"My father wanted me and my brothers to learn the rules of Quran recitation and thus asked Sheikh Abdel Aziz Al-Bakri to teach us. He would come to our home very day and taught us Quran recitation rules."

He noted that Sheikh Al-Bakri had mastery over Ibtihal and Quran recitation and was very talented in the Quranic field and "that was why my father asked him to teach us Quran recitation."

He underlined that the most important factor in the Quran teaching process is the master who teaches the Quran.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Sheikh Yasser regretted that Quranic education in Egypt does not receive as much attention as it should.

"Many people in Egypt attach a lot of importance to their children learning sports and foreign languages like English and French but they pay little attention to their Quranic education."

Asked about his recitation style, Sheikh Yasser Abdul-Basit Abdus-Samad said he and his brothers follow the style of their father in Quran recitation.

He added that he likes the recitations of Sheikh Mustafa Emaeil and Sheikh Muhammad Umran among prominent Qaris of Egypt.

Sheikh Yasser further referred to his visit to Iran, saying that he travelled to Iran some five years ago to recite the Quran in a number of cities across the country.

Sheikh Yasser is a member of the presiding board of Egypt's Union of Quran Reciters and Memorizers. He was born in 1969 and started learning the Quran at an early age under the supervision of his father Abdul-Basit Abdus-Samad.

Sheikh Abdul-Basit Abdus-Samad (1927-1988) is remembered as one of the most renowned contemporary Qaris in Egypt and the entire Muslim world.

He is known for his good and accurate way of recitation and adherence to the rules of Tajweed (intonation and modulation) such as Idgham (diphthong) Ghunnah (Nasal voice) and so on.

He is also known for his great ability to demonstrate the best way of pronouncing letters from their place of articulation in a powerful and good way as well as for the sweetness of his voice.
