Indian Muslim group to send team to Iraq to protect Shia shrines

The Anjuman-e-Haideri, the organisation that governs the Jorbagh Karbala, on Saturday said a six-member team will travel to Iraq to discuss modalities of sending volunteers to protect shrines from the ISIS (Islamic State) and assist in humanitarian efforts.

The Akali Dal also lent its support to the delegation and said one of the agendas was to attempt to bring back 40 Indians who were kidnapped by the terrorist group, many of whom are from Punjab.

AEH general secretary Syed Bahadur Abbas Naqvi said the delegation would be headed by Maulana Kalbe Jawwad, general secretary of the Majlis-Ulema-e-Hind.

"The AEH delegation is scheduled to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi as well as other members of the cabinet. We also plan to meet religious leaders in our attempt to fight terrorism. We had intended to go earlier but were delayed because of changes in the Iraqi government," Naqvi said.

One of the priorities of the delegation, Naqvi said, will be to find out the modalities of sending volunteers to Iraq and identify areas where help is needed.

"We had asked volunteers to register themselves to assist in repairing the damage caused by the ISIS. Registration was done at the AEH headquarters in Delhi and other branches. More than 2 lakh volunteers have signed up. We will speak to the functionaries there and identify what sort of people they need - whether it is engineers or doctors," he said.

National secretary of the Akali Dal Kuldeep Singh Bhogal said, "We support this delegation and we want them to look for to bring back the 40 Indians. We condemn ISIS and stand against the terror they propound."
