Ali Asghar Mirshekari, the deputy governor-general of the border province for security and law enforcement affairs, said the incident took place on Monday at Negur, located between Pishin and Baqukalat regions.
The guards were on patrol in the border area when assailants opened fire, he said, noting that a rocket-propelled grenade killed 3 sergeants and 4 soldiers, while the eighth victim was shot by a Simonov sniper gun.
The gunmen had entered Iran from Pakistan and fled back to the country after the deadly attack, he said.
Earlier on Monday, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) had said in a statement that it has smashed a terrorist team, affiliated with foreign espionage services, in Qasr-e Qand and Nikshahr counties in the same province.
The IRGC Ground Force commander said the Iranian forces inflicted heavy damages on the terrorists and confiscated large amount of arms and equipment, including 200 kilograms of explosives, detonators, ammunition for AK-47 and machine guns, and electronic devices.
The issue is currently under investigation by a special Task Force, Deputy Police Chief for Social Affairs Brigadier General Saeed Montazer al-Mahdi said in a press conference on Tuesday morning.
In its social network account, the Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a similar event on Thursday, three Iranian policemen who were on duty at a makeshift station were killed when unknown gunmen opened fire on their station at a park in the city of Hamidiyeh, southwestern Khuzestan province.
Montazer al-Mahdi also touched upon the Hamidiyeh incident, saying that the Police have found some clues and arrested a number of suspects linked to the deadly attack.
