An interview with the Dutch Muslim lady Zainab Buitelaar about; Imam Ali (a.s)

Q- According to your opinion, what kind of main characteristics of Hazarat Ali’s personality made him popular?

A- Bismillah ir-Rahman, ir-Rahim, I admire Imam Ali (peace be upon him) for his great works, his righteousness, his courage and his patience.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) has given us so many revelations, speeches and books with information about all aspects in daily life. From him we got a lot of knowlegde about Allah and the All-Knowing. He and Hazrat Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her) had many enemies, who wanted to destroy or change Islam.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) defended Islam with his voice, sword and his soul and life! He had the patience and a clear insight to react on the enemies on the right time in the right way.

Imam Ali (as) did not give his advices only from the side of the battlefield but he fought cougariously together with the other mujjaheddin of Islam and in the meantime he never lost his responsibility of emphasizing on the rights of human beings while facing the enemies in the battlefield.

Imam Ali and his family (peace be upon them) lived without food for days because of their compassion with the poor.   Q- According to the modern Youths’ morality, how can Hazrat Ali (a.s.) be adopted as a role model?

A- Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was the first male follower of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).  According to a narrative, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was about nine years old when he decided to follow the Holy Prophet (PUBH), and this great decision in that age makes him an example for young people and proves that he had the courage to chose the right path of Islam at this very young age, while there were just two other Muslims.

He stood up for Islam “His whole life, in words and deeds”.

He practiced what he preached.

He spent his youth in the presence of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon  him and his family) who thought him all about Islam, Islamic values, social and moral ethics and gave him the best example(اسوة حسنة (.

There are a lot of revelations we got from Imam Ali (peace be upon him) about youth and morals, about difficult situations the young people have to deal with. For example, in many ahadith we can learn from the advices of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) about controlling one's emotions. His advices are like the ones of a most knowledgeable elder brother.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) explains clearly what Allah the All-Wise is expecting from us, but gives us space to think about it, according to our own lives, which will insha'Allah lead us toward the right decision. (For example this saying of Imam Ali: "Judge your own souls before the time of judging of your action arrives. Make an assessment of yourself before you are called upon to account for your conduct in this existence.") This is the way of teaching the youth.   Wa aleikum salaam, Zainab (Liselotte Buitelaar) from Holland
