The Epic of Imam Husain

In this, the fifty-fifth episode of our series, we look at another interesting event which occurred in the court of the tyrant Yazid, with the entry in Damascus as captives of the noble ladies and children of the household of Prophet Mohammad (SAWA).

Yazid was seated on an elevated gold throne, while his courtiers and foreign envoys sat on gilded chairs around him. Hundreds of tribal elders, military commanders, and important and famous people were present in the court of the so-called caliph. Yazid, who was an open violator of the laws of Islam, was already quite drunk. The accursed oppressor had the head of Martyr of Karbala, Imam Husain (AS) on a tray at his feet. And many of those present were praising Yazid, fawning over him. The cruel tyrant was surrounded by sycophants who believed that flattery would get you everywhere.

One of those present in Yazid’s court was the ambassador of Byzantine or the Eastern Roman Empire, with its capital at Constantinople. He was a special guest at the gathering. On seeing the severed head of the Martyr of Karbala, the Roman ambassador asked Yazid: whose head is that?

Yazid replied: Why do you want to know?

The ambassador said: I have to report everything when I get back to my country.  Hence I have got to know, why you are celebrating, and why you are so happy.  I have to report this to the Caesar.

Yazid looked at the ambassador and said:  This is the head of Husain who refused to pledge allegiance to me.

The ambassador asked once again: Who was he?

Yazid reluctantly replied: The son of Fatema, the daughter of Mohammad.

The shocked and surprised ambassador asked: You mean the same Mohammad who is your Prophet?

The drunken Yazid said: Yes.

The ambassador, who had up to that point managed to keep his calm despite the gruesome spectacle of a severed human head in front of him, suddenly became distraught and agitated.

He said: May you all perish with this religion of yours! My father is a direct descendent of Prophet David, and despite the fact that Prophet David lived over a millennium ago, Christians greatly respect me, They look upon me with reverence. Even the soil I stand on is looked upon as ‘blessed soil’. In our religion Christianity, a church has been built on the exact spot of a footprint of a donkey which is believed to have carried Prophet Jesus. But what about you; you have killed the son of the daughter of your own Prophet!!

The Roman ambassador’s logical remarks, which brought into question Yazid’s conduct and actions, made the self-styled caliph extremely angry. So much so that he ordered the execution of the Roman ambassador right there and then, in order to save his own reputation amongst the Romans and Greeks. Had the ambassador gone back to Constantinople, and reported about the cruel killing of the grandson of the Prophet of Islam by those who call themselves Muslims and political heirs of the Prophet, it would have been an absolute disgrace for Yazid!!

As Yazid ordered his execution, the Roman ambassador shouted: Yazid you should know! Last night, I saw your Prophet, Mohammad (SAWA) in my sleep. He told me: O Roman. You belong to paradise. You are one of the people of Heaven.

I was surprised by this dream, and what the Prophet of Islam had told me, who is a Christian. But now I understand the tidings he gave me to arouse my conscience. I affirm that there is no God but Allah. And I testify that Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah, and has been sent by Allah.

After saying this, the Roman ambassador rushed towards the blessed severed head of Imam Husain (AS), kissed it, hugged it, and held it close to his chest.
