The holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf, Iraq, hosted over two million pilgrims on Friday. The pilgrims converged on the holy city to mourn the demise anniversary of the Holy Prophet of Islam and martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan and Imam Reza (PBUT), the 2nd and 8th Shia Imams.

The number of pilgrims at the holy shrine on Friday was estimated to surpass two million.

The Astan (custodianship) of the holy shrine in a statement said all members of the Astan as well as hundreds of volunteers from other parts of Iraq and other countries were mobilized to serve the pilgrims.

It said government departments and security forces of the Najaf province as well as adjacent provinces had also made necessary preparations to make sure the mourning ceremonies are organized well.

Iranian people also attended ceremonies held across the country on Thursday to mourn the passing anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan (AS).

Millions of devotees of the Holy Prophet and the Infallible Imams from across the country, as well as a large number of foreign pilgrims, gathered in the northeastern holy city of Mashhad to mark the occasion.
