The radical group of Daesh (ISIS) has banned  private internet access in the city of Shaddadi in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah, activists said on Saturday.

The ISIS-affiliated Sharia Court issued a decision to close all private internet cafés across Shaddadi city. It also banned the residents from using any internet devices at home.

The Sharia Court has vowed that anyone violates the decision “will be mercilessly punished”.

Local media activist Abu Imad Mashadani said: “Only ISIS-linked internet cafés are allowed to operate in Shaddadi, as the terror group can monitor online activities of the clients there.”

“ISIS militants are trying to prevent media workers and civil rights activists from reporting on the ongoing atrocities carried out by the group against civilians in Shaddadi. This is the main reason for banning private internet in the city,” Mashadani said.

This comes amid preparations by the Kurdish-Arab alliance of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to launch a battle for regaining Shaddadi city from the fist of the extremist group.

Shaddadi is considered the last bastion for ISIS in Hasakah, after the western-backed SDF units liberated more than 230 towns and villages in the province from the group over the past three months.
