The Bahrain Airport authorities banned on Wednesday November 9, 2016, deputy Secretary General of the European-Bahraini Organization for Human Rights, Fatima al-Halwaji, from leaving the country.
Al-Halwaji is one of many rights and political activists whom the authorities ban from leaving the country. The most recent case was that of activist Monzer al-Khour, who was banned from traveling last Saturday by the King Fahed Bridge borderline authorities.
Authorities informed her that she could not travel abroad based on an order issued by the public prosecutor’s office, Arabic-language Lualua television network reported.
The order read that Halwaji had been slapped with a travel ban on charges of “spreading false news through social media networks,” it said.
Bahraini authorities have been banning activists and rights personnel from leaving the country since last June. In return, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, High Commissioner for Human Rights Zayd bin Raad Hussein, Washington and London denounced this measure.
