The Holy Qur’an states: “This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion” (Surat Al-Ma’idah, Verse 3)
One of the controversial interpretations about this verse is that there is no relationship between this verse and what is said before and after it. Whether we regard this verse as Al-Ghadir Verse like all Shia or most of Sunn scholars or we accept that it is not related to the Ghadir Event, the Question will be:
Why the said verse isn’t closely related to what comes before and after that in the Qur’an?
The same reasoning applies to the verse of purification (Tatheer) which has been frequently acknowledged and confirmed by both Shi and Sunni scholars; although this verse is related to Five Purified Ones of Allah, it is mentioned among those verses whose contents are giving advice to wives of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Another point which is remarkable here is that Guardianship in this verse is regarded as a prefect favor by which Islam was perfected and it is because of this guardianship that Islam has been chosen by God; the three parts of this statement, “I have Perfected…, and I have completed…, and I have chosen…..” are separate from each other and its content is only related to the Ghadir Event!
Also, why the word “Al-Youm”– this day – has preceded the others is because of ‘restriction’.
To clarify what is mentioned, one may state that the marked sentence in which the word “Al-Youm” – this day – has preceded other words implies the perfection of religion and blessings and the fact that this religion is favored by God is only restricted to this day –al-Ghadir.
Now we can easily understand why Eid al-Ghadir Khumm is one of the greatest feasts in Islam or it is “Eid-e- Allahu Akbar”
The other point is “Al” in “Al-Youm” indicates that it is proper noun and a known occasion, that is, it refers to a special day that is known to all Muslims although some may pretend that they know nothing about it.
The last point which is vividly confirmed by Sunni scholars is that Al-Ma’idah is the last Chapter revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and there is no abrogating verse in it.
