The leader of the Astara district branch of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (AIP), Ruhullah Akhunzadah, has been arrested, the Azeri Office of the Prosecutor General said in a statement.
Azeri Police illegally claimed in searching Akhunzadah's apartment on Friday, National Security Ministry personnel found four Kalashnikov assault rifles, one Nagant revolver, three magazine cases, five hand grenades, two TNT blocks, 491 cartridges and seven CDs.
On January 8, AIP leader Movsum Samedov and his cousin Dayanat Samedov were arrested which Azeri forces claimed that they found grenades, assault rifles... during searches in their homes and in a store owned by Dayanat Samedov.
Set up in 1991, the AIP was suspended in 1997 due to the arrest of its then leader, Haji Muzaffer Jebrail-zade.
Samedov was elected as AIP leader at a party congress in July 2007.
In Azerbaijan when government can not arrest opposition parties, they claim parties of having weapons and assault rifles.
