MUSLIMS in Oxfordshire who smoke are being called on to use Ramadan as the push they need to kick the habit for good.
Ahsan Amin, the Imam at Oxford Central Mosque, says that during the holy month – which requires followers across the globe to abstain from food and drink during daylight hours – people should consider not smoking as part of their fast.
He said: “Ramadan is the month of fasting – the month of self-control and self-discipline.
"It's a time when Muslims come face to face with their eating, drinking, smoking and other related weaknesses.”
Smoking cessation specialist Solutions 4 Health, which is contracted by Oxfordshire County Council, runs Friday sessions at the mosque in Manzil Way where people can learn how to manage the cravings and irritability caused by giving up.
Nicotine replacement aids – such as gum, sprays and tablets – are usually meant to be taken orally, but other replacements are available that can be used by people fasting.
Dr Eunan O’Neill, consultant in public health at Oxfordshire County Council, said: “Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do to improve your health.
"That’s why the council invests in a service designed to support smokers who want to stop.
"Working together we want to find every way possible of encouraging smokers to quit for good and we are delighted the Imam is lending his voice to the cause this Ramadan.”
