Café in Kilburn feeds community for free throughout Ramadan

Café in Kilburn feeds community for free throughout Ramadan

A Kilburn café has opened its doors to feed the community for free throughout Ramadan. Concord Café in Carlton Vale, has started a volunteer led Big Dinner project as part of the Muslim fasting month, until July 5.

Momota Ahmed, of the National Algerian Centre (NAC), which manages the café, said: “The main aim is to welcome the community as they break their fast. We’ve had 80 to 100 people a night so far – Chinese, Jamaican, Trinidadian, Pakistani, European, the whole neighbourhood. We have kids, women, men and old people. It feels like a real achievement.”

The menu includes Moroccan Harira soup and Algerian Chorba soup, as well as tagines, casseroles and traditional home made dishes each day comprising North African cuisine.

Lynda Nebab, chairwoman of the NAC, said: “As part of Ramadan, the Muslim community will once again emphasise the spirit of conviviality, togetherness and generosity. What could be more friendly and unifying than a humble feast?

“Brent’s multicultural and diverse borough makes a huge contribution to our communities in highlighting the commonalities between communities as opposed to the differences. If you are keen on building an atmosphere of serenity, solidarity and friendship. I would encourage you to get involved in our project”.

Brent Council is supporting this years’ project which was first launched in 20l3 to bring communities closer together with an aim to develop social cohesion between Algerians and the diversity of cultures in London.

The Concord Café, Carlton Vale, 9pm-10.30pm Monday to Sunday until July 5.
